Cheap energy fixes being pulled - ACT NOW
So far: Npower UP 10%, British Gas UP 9%, SSE UP 8%. Beat the hikes

Every energy customer who hasn't acted, check now. Since last week, two top cheap fixes have been pulled (if you locked in then, you're fine - see the Q&A) and British Gas & Npower have hiked prices. The rest of the big six, like sheep, are sure to follow. So no apologies for my continued nagging.

Many can save £100s and lock in no price hikes for up to 4 years with a cheap fixed tariff. As some have no exit penalties, if prices elsewhere get cheaper again, you can leave. Here are just two examples of huge feedback we've had:

Jenni tweeted: "Wow wow wow! We saved £350/yr and fixed our energy tariff."

Paul K tweeted: "Just ditched SSE & BG after 15 years. Now paying less & fixed till 2017. Thanks for making it so easy."

  • ALWAYS compare to find YOUR cheapest (and get cashback). The table shows average prices, but your winner depends on usage & location.

We've built an MSE Cheap Energy Club Top Fixed Tariff Picks comparison page to show your winner, as normal comparisons just sort by tariff price.

It has BG, SSE & Npower's new rates in, so savings are compared against post-hike prices. If Energy Club can switch you, you'll get £30 dual fuel cashback. More cashback options in Cheap Gas & Elec.

TOP FIXES FOR TYPICAL USAGE - valid 23 Oct 2013. Not prepay.
Fixed until Exit fee Cost/yr
Typical standard tariff (estimated post-hikes) (1) - - £1,550
Typical standard tariff (pre-hike price) - - £1,420
Longest, cheap fix: Npower*
31 Dec 2017 None £1,370
Next longest fix (slightly cheaper): EDF*
31 Mar 2017 None £1,340
Cheapest no-exit penalty fix: EDF* 31 March 2015 None £1,180
Cheapest fix but with exit fee: First Utility* 31 May 2015 £30/fuel £1,170
Cheapest variable (subject to price rises) - - £1,120

EVEN MORE... BEAT THE ENERGY HIKES Q&A
Help whether you're planning to fix, or already have

martin energy youtube videoOver the last few weeks, we've collated your forum & social media questions. As they've flooded in, we've added even more. Here are just some.

Click the video Q&A on the right if you prefer to listen than read (there are more questions too...) or see the full Energy Fixing FAQs list.

Q. The Prime Minister's saying switch but you're saying fix? Why?
A. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, and frankly the PM's proved just that. His call to ditch & switch mid-price hikes as a political point to show the market's competitive is too blunt, and rather damaging advice.

Try to compare & switch right now and your cheapest will likely be a firm that's yet to announce hikes, but will soon. So you could be shifting out of the frying pan into the fire. Focusing on cheap fixes stops that happening.

If you do want the cheapest 'variable' tariff, best to wait until all the big six have upped prices so it's a level playing field to compare.
Q. Should I take a short cheaper fix, or fix long? I can't decide.
A. It's less certain short-term, but over the next 5 yrs 30-40% price rises are predicted. For a short fix to beat 4-winter ones, two things need to happen:

a) Prices rise less than 10%+ each year. It's almost certain prices will rise overall every year; the question is by how much? 10% annual rises are possible, but pretty high. If you're cautious and can't risk big hikes, go long.

b) You must keep switching. The maths above assume as soon as your short fix ends, you'll fix/switch cheap again. The Cheap Energy Club will monitor to tell you when to do it. If you're not the type who'll bother, go long.

What are others doing? Energy Club stats show 83% fixing short, 17% long.
Q. I'm on a prepay (key or card) meter. Can I fix?
A. Yes, but only with British Gas and the limited competition means here the cheapest fixes are far from cheap. Its longest fix, which lasts three winters (till March 2016) may turn out to be a good deal if prices rise hard, but it's a tough call as you pay a lot more now.

To see how it stacks up, you can compare prepay tariffs and click the 'fixes' tab. If you're looking at non-fixes, while those on standard deals should save, you risk moving to a firm that'll soon hike. So you may be best waiting until all have hiked, so it's a level playing field to compare.

It's also worth considering shifting to a billed meter, if your credit score allows. For how to do this cheaply, see the Cheap Prepay guide.
Q. I have electricity only, can I still fix?
A. Yes, and all our top picks are available elec-only. Compare Top Elec Fixes.
Q. Comparing shows a fix'll cost me more - should I still do it?
A. If you're with a firm that hasn't yet hiked, then remember it's likely to up prices 8%-10%, so unless fixing costs you more than that, it's a no-brainer.

If it's more than that, or your provider has already hiked prices and the comparison shows a fix costs more; this is all about how much you need certainty. Energy tarts who switch regularly (the MSE Cheap Energy Club gives alerts), could just ride it out. If not, a fix is worth it more often.
Q. My fix is ending soon (eg, Jan or Mar 2014) - should I ditch & refix?
A. Without a crystal ball, it's impossible to know. So here's my best guess.

No exit penalties (eg, EDF Blue): As it can take 2 mths to actually switch over, you'll hardly have any time left on your cheap fix, so there's little problem.

With exit penalties: These can be £100 and I'd be surprised if fixed prices rose that much by Jan, so it's worth sticking until mid-Dec (when you can switch penalty-free). Yet for March finishers who want to grab a long fix, the risk is bigger that you may miss the boat.
Q. Is a fixed discount the same as a fix?
A. Annoyingly some firms offer 'fixed discount' price promises, ie, they say "you'll always pay 6% less than our standard tariff". In other words, it's a variable deal subject to price rises. Our list of course, only shows real fixes.
Q. Is it too late to fix with British Gas?
A. No, but why would you want to? I'm surprised how many have asked this. Frankly it's missing the point. This isn't about just fixing, it's about fixing cheaply. Find your cheapest using Energy Club Top Fix Picks comparison.
Q. Does switching affect my credit rating?
A. Suppliers often carry out credit checks when you apply that show on your credit file. Lenders can see these. Each application can have a minor effect on a future credit score. It's usually not an issue unless you're applying for lots of other credit cards and loans all around the same time.
Q. Can landlords dictate which energy provider you can use?
A. If you pay the landlord for electricity and/or gas, it's their choice. Yet if you pay the bill, you should be free to switch (unless it means changing meter), but some tenancy agreements make it a breach. Talk to your landlord - they may just be happy switching to a cheaper tariff with your existing firm. Do let us know your experiences via our Renters Switching Poll.
Q. I'm in debt to my supplier, can I switch?
A. If you're on prepay, you can if the debt's £500 or less. Otherwise, it varies by supplier and payment method. British Gas and Scottish Power told us you'd need to pay off the debt before switching away. The other big six firms may let you switch, then pay it off. If you're in credit when you switch, your old provider needs to give you the cash.
Q. Is it true that paying by direct debit is cheapest?
A. Yes, but specifically for monthly direct debits, which can be 6% cheaper. Your bill is then estimated, so make sure you do regular meter readings.
Q. I fixed last week. Now prices are up, will I get it?
A. The point of a fix is you're not affected by price rises.

If you fixed to cheap Npower tariffs that've now been pulled, you should be fine - you'll normally get the prices advertised at the point you applied (whether directly or via a comparison site). Things can go wrong though, eg, you fail a credit check, or if you're heavily indebted to your supplier and it tries to block you. If so, you should be told within about two weeks. More details in Already fixed? Q&A.
Q. How long does it take to get confirmation after switching?
A. You usually get a confirmation email from the comparison site within 24 hours (definitely via Cheap Energy Club). After that, you're due a welcome pack, but as so many are switching right now providers are swamped. It could take weeks (and sometimes they even deny you've done it).
Q. How do I switch - will the new company contact the old?
A. Yes. There's no need to contact your old provider (unless, perhaps, you are in debt with it and want to discuss how you pay it off).

New Tesco Clubcard Boost (& urgently reclaim lost vouchers)
Starts Mon. Tesco's Christmas Clubcard Boost means you can double Clubcard vouchers' value on more goods

Regular shoppers at the UK's biggest store (it takes £1 in £8 spent in UK shops) earn Clubcard points, which are converted into vouchers 4 times a year. The latest batch is due out - use our redemption recipe below to gain massive extra value.

  • Tesco Clubcard BoostUrgent: Find £100s of lost Tesco vouchers (£16m expiring soon). Vouchers last two years, and Tesco says 2m people have unspent vouchers worth up to £16m, due to expire on 30 Nov. Whether lost or just forgotten, Reclaim Old Tesco Vouchers. Forumite sushiguru's proof it works: "Holy cow - £115 of vouchers, made my week."
  • Check if you can QUADRUPLE value. Before doubling in-store, check Tesco's Boost With Clubcard Partners deals (Tesco Rewards, as was). You can get 3x or 4x value, eg, £10 becomes £40 at Ask, £30 at Goldsmiths, or £20 on train tickets. See true values in Top 10 Clubcard Partners.
  • Starts Mon. Double vouchers' value in-store and online. Now incl toys, gifts & champagne. Earlier this year, the supermarket giant made its 'double-up' promo an ongoing deal, but with fewer departments. So a £5 voucher can be swapped online and in-store for £10 in its clothing, baby, cosmetics, fragrance & other depts.
From Monday, its Christmas Boost adds 5 categories: toys, gifts, electricals/phones and Finest champagne & wine.

Forum Hottie. Sainsbury's ALL TOYS reduced, some by 50%. Starts Wed. Canny bargain hunters with kids wait for this one each year. In-store only (excludes Halloween/Xmas branded items). See Sainsbury's Toys.

Bank a b*****d? Hassle-free £100 for switching
A month ago the '7-day switch' was turned on, making ditching your bank less hassle. You're telling us it's worked

Seven-day switching's designed to mean all your direct debits & standing orders'll be moved within 7 working days, and any payments made to your old account will auto-forward to your new one, meaning ditching & switching should be much less hassle.

  • Tesco Clubcard Boost £100 bribe to switch to top bank account. Some banks currently bribe you to join them. A few top deals below, full options in Bank Accounts. All do a credit check.

Free £100, top customer service & 6% linked savings. First Direct's* smashed every service poll we've done, 93% rate it 'great'. New switchers get £100, a £250 0% overdraft and a linked 6% regular saver account. Minimum pay-in £1,000/mth.

Cashback on bills and 3% savings. Santander 123* pays a huge 3% AER variable on £3,000 to £20,000 balances, plus up to 3% cashback on phone, energy, council tax and some mortgage direct debits, dwarfing its £2/mth fee.

0% overdraft for a YEAR: Nationwide* FlexDirect gives 0% for 12mths. See that as respite to sort your finances and clear it, or there's a 50p/day overdraft fee after. No minimum pay-in for overdraft.
  • Is the 7-day switch really no hassle? For most people, it's done what it says on the tin. MSE team members Helen, Archna and Andy found their switches pretty smooth, and their accounts are up & running without hassle, but Andy's still waiting for his £100 Halifax switch bonus. We've lots of user feedback too, eg, @NickMixmag: "Switched from Halifax to Santander. 7 days, all DDs and SOs sorted. Easy peasy," and Carolin: "I did it and it was excellent. No problems at all."

Of course, we've heard of some glitches - mostly those switching from a single to a joint account (or vice versa), or inconsistent name, address or date of birth problems. Full help to beat these in our new 7-Day Switching Q&A.

Question of the week

Q: I've already paid a small amount into my old ISA in the current tax year, even though I haven't reached the limit. If I transfer now, will I be able to pay anything else into this new ISA before next April? Robyn, via email.

MSE Andy's A: Yes, as long as you transfer it whole (you can't part-transfer a current-year ISA anyway), you can continue to make contributions under the ISA rules, up to the maximum £5,760. Your new provider may have rules that block new contributions - but that's rare.

Remember, though, when transferring - never, ever, ever, EVER withdraw money from a cash ISA instead. Then it's no longer in an ISA, so you've lost the tax benefits. Instead, ask your new provider to transfer it for you. See Top ISA Transfers for a full guide and best buys.

Any links with a * by them are affiliated, which means get a product via this link and a contribution may be made to MoneySavingExpert.com, which helps it stay free to use. You shouldn't notice any difference; the links don't impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things we write) isn't changed due to it. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it's still included in the same way. More info: See how this site is financed.

As we believe transparency is important, we're including the following 'un-affiliated' web-addresses for content too:

Unaffiliated web-addresses for links in this email

npower.com, edfenergy.com, first-utility.com, barclaycard.co.uk, fluid.co.uk, mbna.co.uk, lloydsbank.com, santander-products.co.uk, nationwide.co.uk, firstdirect.com, confused.com, comparethemarket.com, productsandservices.bt.com, halifax.co.uk, gocompare.com, admiral.com, aviva.co.uk, cbonline.co.uk, sainsburysbank.co.uk, energyhelpline.com, moneysupermarket.com, uswitch.com, postoffice.co.uk.

Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Note
