Did you know there's a bank that'll...?
The 10 need-to-knows to MAKE MONEY out of innovative new accounts

Once upon a time, bank accounts were ugly creatures that bit hard when you went overdrawn, and gave nowt back when in credit. Today, well, most still do just that - but a few innovative gems sparkle. So as we launch our new service ratings, instead of bank bashing, we're applauding the Best Bank Accounts.

1. The new switching system means it's now no hassle. After many wrist slaps for blocking competition, the banks finally launched 7-day switching last Sept. They now switch your direct debits & standing orders within a week, close your old account and ensure payments made to it get forwarded to your new bank (for the first 13 mths). See 7-Day Switching Info.
2. The bank that PAYS YOU to pay your bills. It's a staggering turnaround. 3yrs ago, Santander was a customer service pariah. Yet it now has hands-down the UK's most innovative current account - Santander 123* is the customer service silver medallist, with 74% rating it great.

For those in credit, it can pay well. Roly tweeted me yesterday to say: "We've been using it for 7 months now. I think it's great. With the credit card we've earned approx £350. Impressed." To qualify, you need to pay in £500/month (this just means you pay your salary in, provided it's £6,000+).

- It pays cashback on your bills. Pay by direct debit and you get 3% cashback on mobile, phone & b'band; 2% on energy; and 1% on water, council tax and Santander mortgage payments. These should dwarf its £2/mth fee, as someone with typical bills earns £10/mth, though many get more.

- It pays 3% AER savings interest if you've £3,000-£20,000. This smashes the top savings rate of 1.5% AER. See full Santander 123 analysis.

- Possible 3% petrol cashback.
The Santander 123 credit card* pays cashback of 3% on petrol/travel, 2% in department stores, 1% in supermarkets. Its £24/yr fee is rebated in year one for 123 account holders. But always repay IN FULL, or it's 18.9% p.a. (22.8% rep APR incl fee). See Petrol Credit Cards.
3. The account saving up to £500 on travel, mobile, roadside insurance.
For many, paying a big monthly fee for an account is a waste of cash - shift to fee-free, and save the up to £300/yr cost. Some can even Reclaim Bank Account Fees. Yet done right, and treated as a cheap way to buy insurance, paying a fee can be a MoneySaver, and here Nationwide tops the tree.

- Pay £10/mth for breakdown, FAMILY travel & mobile insurance. Nationwide FlexPlus* covers parents' plus resident kids' smartphones, family world travel insurance (max age 74), roadside cover & an extra year's warranty on electricals. A family needing 'em all could pay £600/yr separately.

- Free travel insurance. Its no-monthly fee FlexAccount* includes Europe travel insurance (max age 74) for the account holder(s) - a corker, especially for older travellers. You can upgrade to world cover for £20. Full eligibility info and more options in Best Bank Accounts.

As with all travel policies, with account deals, disclose pre-existing conditions.
4. The bank that simply pays you £100 then £5 each month. An easy incentive, this. Halifax's Reward* account pays no interest, just pays you £5 monthly after tax, provided you stay in credit. As it also gives you £100 to switch, it can be lucrative. Customer service is decent too (see below).

As well as passing the credit check (as with all banks), you'll need to pay in £750/mth (equiv to £9,200 salary) and set up/transfer 2+ direct debits.
5. The MSE bank service gold medallist. Your bank account is the one financial product you truly interact with day-to-day. So here, service counts. That's why every 6 months, we poll to find out which bank you rate the most.

Yet again, the gold medallist is First Direct. It also gives you £100 to join up, has a 0% overdraft for up to £250, and a 6% linked savings account, though you do need to earn £13,600 to get this. See Best Bank Accounts.

NatWest/RBS just avoided the wooden spoon, which goes to TSB - not really on-message for a bank spinning itself as a "local banking" option.

Current account service rating, Feb 2014 (for past 6 mths)

1 First Direct 92% 6% 2%
2 Santander 123 (b) 74% 22% 4%

12 Yorkshire/Clydesdale 40% 41% 19%
13 NatWest/RBS 37% 46% 17%
14 TSB 37% 43% 20%
8,915 votes. (a) Ranked based on 2 points for great, 1 for OK, 0 for poor. We've excluded banks with fewer than 100 votes. See full result. (b) As these are big accounts, we've split them out to get a more accurate rating.
6. Top ethical bank accounts. Here, we factor in both rate and the rating given by Ethical Consumer evaluating behaviour on the environment, human & animal rights, politics and where they invest.

The top pick has generally been the Co-op Bank*, which currently pays you £100 to switch to it and donates £25 to one of seven charities. Though note Co-op Bank's now 70% privately owned so may not remain ethical.

Two building societies also do well - Nationwide*, whose deals I've already featured (see point 3), and Norwich & Peterborough, whose debit card allows cheap spending abroad.

Or for a real change, use a credit union. These are local savings and loan non-profit co-operatives. But while there are 500 available, only 25 offer current accounts. Use the link to check if there's one near you.
7. Slash the cost of your overdraft to 0%. An overdraft is a debt like any other, so if you often go into the red, the most important thing is to focus on cutting its cost. That should give you respite to work to clear it.

- Changing bank to get 0%. First Direct offers £100 to new joiners and a £250 0% overdraft (min pay-in £1,000/mth). For a possibly bigger 0% overdraft (credit score depending) there's Nationwide FlexDirect*, but it only lasts a year (it's 50p/day after). Full eligibility info: Best Bank Accounts

- Shift it to a 0% credit card. For bigger amounts, a few balance transfer credit cards let newbies 'money transfer' cash into a bank account, so it pays off the overdraft and you owe the card instead.

Virgin Money* offers accepted new custs 29mths 0% for a 4% fee of the amount transferred. MBNA’s*  also 29mths 0% with a 4% fee. After, they jump to 20.9% and 22.9% rep APR respectively. Use our Eligibility Checker to see which you're most likely to get.

Just be careful with this though, it's easy to get it wrong. Read full help in our Money Transfers guide. Most especially, never miss a min monthly repayment and don't spend on these cards, they're not cheap for that.
8. The accounts where you won't be credit scored. You need to pass a credit score to get all the accounts above. Yet basic bank accounts don't need credit checks, as they just provide a no-frills, no-overdraft service. You'll need to have ID to get one though. A couple of tips for this...

a) When applying, ask for the specific account by name, or you often get the wrong forms and are then rejected. Options incl Barclays Cash Card & Co-op Bank's Cashminder (not avail to bankrupts). See Basic Bank Accounts.

b) Even though they've no overdraft, if you try to spend more than you've got they can still hit you with a penalty. Beware. Manage them carefully.
9. Couples can do it better together... As each bank account needs a minimum pay-in to get it, if you're a couple living together in a trusting relationship, you can max the gain by working in concert.

For example, one of you can get a Santander 123* current account, using it for savings and paying all the bills from it. The other could get, say, Halifax Reward* to get the free £100 and £5 each month.

Or if one (hopefully for the right reasons) has a monthly fee packaged account, make it a joint account. Then you can usually both get the 'extras'.
10. No banks are nice if you go beyond your overdraft. It's said a bank will lend you an umbrella when the sun shines and ask for it back when it rains. Go beyond your overdraft limit and this feels true. When you're in trouble, charges get hefty, up to £25 a pop. The best advice is to check what you've got regularly, budget, and tell your bank if you're struggling.

If you have got into trouble, and see charge upon charge rack up so that it's put you in financial hardship, it can be possible to Reclaim Bank Charges For Free. Our guide has full template letters to help, and it works...

Rick tweeted: "Followed your tips, re bank charges, for brother who lost his job - £252 re-credited to his account. Thank you!"

New. The best 0% debt-shift card EVER?
BOOM! Nationwide fires a huge salvo in balance transfer price war. Shift debts to 26mths 0% for just a 0.75% fee

If you've existing credit card debts, a balance transfer is when you get a new card that repays them for you, so you owe it instead at a lower rate. Good news - there's a ferocious price war on, and Nationwide's just entered with a vengeance...

  • New 26 months 0%, just a 0.75% fee. Accepted new Nationwide* cardholders can do a 26mths 0% balance transfer for a 0.75% fee (min £5) - the market's joint-lowest, but with a 0% that's over TWICE AS LONG.

    How good is it?
Last week Barclaycard* launched a 31mth 0% deal, the longest ever, with a 2.99% fee. After a number crunch, we found even if it'd take you that long to clear the debt, Nationwide's almost always cheaper as the low fee trumps the longer 0%. In fact, for all but those making just min monthly repayments, it usually beats all other balance transfers. As Nationwide's not a big player in this area, many are eligible as 'new cardholders'.

So our Free Balance Transfer Eligibility Checker shows your odds of getting each card, incl poor credit scorers' cards, to minimise applications without hitting your file. All these cards are in it except sadly Nationwide, which chose not to.
  • ALWAYS follow the golden rules. a) Repay at least the set monthly minimum, or you may lose the 0%. b) Clear the debt or shift again before the 0% ends, or rates rocket. c) Don't spend on these, it isn't usually at the cheap rate. d) To decide try our Which Card's Cheapest? tool. e) FULL best buys & help: Best Balance Transfers.

Fill in your CPP reclaiming form - you may be owed £100s
Don't miss out on your share of a £1.3bn mis-selling payback. You asked for form-filling help - here it is

If you're one of the up to 7m who were systemically mis-sold often-useless CPP card and ID fraud policies, either directly or by your bank since 2005, you've likely been sent, or are about to get, a claim form to apply for your money back, often £100s. Many of you have asked for help filling it in, so we've added a section to our CPP Reclaim Help guide. In short...

  • CPP Don't throw the letter away (and help if you didn't get one). Check your post - don't dump the form mistaking it for junk. This is the 3rd CPP letter. The 1st explained the scheme, the 2nd was to vote for redress. If you missed those, don't worry. You can still fill this in to get the cash. Didn't get one or binned it? See 'No CPP Letter?' Help.
  • How to fill out the form(s). There's a form for each card and ID protection. If you had both, complete both. With the "why you want to be considered for compensation?" section, just answer in plain language. If you're unsure, see our CPP Form Template Answers.

For example, if it sold you card protection on the premise it'd cover transactions if your card was stolen, as the bank was responsible anyway, this was mostly pointless - so tell 'em. Or, if it exaggerated ID theft risk, saying you're liable for debt someone else takes out in your name, tell 'em.
  • CPP isn't the same as PPI. CPP schemes promised to insure you against card or ID fraud, while PPI covers loan, credit card or mortgage repayments if you can't due to accident, sickness or unemployment. You could have been mis-sold both, and could reclaim both (over £20bn of PPI was mis-sold). See Reclaim PPI For Free.

Beat the council tax rises? £2,700 council tax reclaim
Many councils are now sending out council tax increase letters. If you're in the wrong band, get it lowered

This April, English councils can increase up to 2%, Welsh up to 5%. The average rise across the two is 2.4% - check your council's proposals (Eng only). Yet regardless, EVERYONE who pays council tax should check whether they're overpaying...

  • wrong band"Been in the wrong band for 20 years, got £2,700." In 1991, when council tax was set up, bands were allocated by a quick fix 2nd-gear valuation (done by driving down streets). This temporary valuation still dictates bands in England & Scotland 23 years on (Wales has revalued). Up to 400,000 homes may be in the wrong band.

So try Martin's Check & Challenge Your Band. If yours is too high, it doesn't just lower future payments, as Russ found out: "Thanks, Martin, after challenging my banding, my local council agreed I'd been in too high a band since 1993. I have just received a refund of over £2,700."

Check 1: Do a Neighbours Check to compare your band with neighbours in similar or identical houses.

Check 2: Find what your house was worth in 1991, as that dictates the bands. Use our Valuation Check Calculator.

But beware - you can only challenge your band, it could be put up as well as down. That's why we say do BOTH checks, to prevent this from happening. If both succeed, read How To Challenge Your Band.
  • Council tax reductions. Those living alone only pay 75% of the rate. Students in an all-student household don't pay (and don't count as a 'person' if living with non-students). See all Council Tax Reductions & Exemptions.

Question of the week

Q: I want to buy a house, but spend half my time in the UK, half abroad. Can I get a mortgage? Nicholas, by email.

MSE Lesley's A: This depends on where you pay tax. If you live here for 183 days or more, you're a UK taxpayer. If so, you can make a normal UK mortgage application, though you'll need to pass that lender's credit & affordability checks.

If you don't pay UK tax, it's more difficult as you can't apply to mainstream UK lenders. Speak to a UK-based broker who specialises in offshore mortgages (and possibly foreign currency mortgages if you're not paid in pounds) to find a specialist lender and the best solution.  You'll need a sizeable deposit - about 25% of the property value is realistic.

Please suggest a question of the week (we can't reply to individual emails).

  • This info does not constitute financial advice, always do your own research on top to ensure it's right for your specific circumstances - and remember we focus on rates not service.

  • We don't as a general policy investigate the solvency of companies mentioned, how likely they are to go bust, but there is a risk any company can struggle and it's rarely made public until it's too late (see the section 75 guide for protection tips).

  • We often link to other websites, but we can't be responsible for their content.

  • Always remember anyone can post on the MSE forums, so it can be very different from our opinion.

More about MoneySaving Expert and Martin Lewis

What is MoneySavingExpert.com?

Founded in February 2003, it's now the UK's biggest consumer help website with over 6 million people getting this email and nearly 10m using the site. In September 2012 it became part of the MoneySupermarket Group PLC. Its focus is simple: how to save cash and fight for financial justice on anything and everything. The site has over 30 full time staff about half of whom are editorial researching, analysing and writing to continually find ways to save money. More info: See About MSE

Who is Martin Lewis?

Martin set up and runs MSE, and still writes this email each week (unless it says so). He's an ultra-focused money-saving journalist and consumer campaigner with his own ITV prime-time The Martin Lewis Money Show, weekly slots on Radio 5 Live, This Morning and Daybreak, amongst others. He’s a columnist for publications including the Telegraph and Woman magazine. More info: See Martin Lewis' biography

What do the links with a * mean?

Any links with a * by them are affiliated, which means get a product via this link and a contribution may be made to MoneySavingExpert.com, which helps it stay free to use. You shouldn't notice any difference; the links don't impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things we write) isn't changed due to it. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it's still included in the same way. More info: See how this site is financed.

As we believe transparency is important, we're including the following 'un-affiliated' web-addresses for content too:
