Warning: 100 days to Christmas
12 saves to DO NOW to ensure you spend less for the big day

Nooo... don't think I like tinsel and Jingle Bells before December any more than the next man. I hate the growing early creep of Christmas. Yet, like any major annual expenditure, planning's crucial. The best time to start's January, but as within the next week we hit 100 days to go, there are still big ways to save.

1. Don't pay for Christmas from December's income. Never just plot a Christmas lust list of everything you want. A typical family's Xmas spending is £835, too much for Dec's income alone. So work out now what you can afford to put aside in Sept, Oct, Nov & Dec. Once you know how much you've got, ask: "What's the best possible Christmas we can have on that?"
2. Free £100 Amazon voucher in time for Christmas. The Amex Gold* charge card gives accepted customers who spend £2,000 on it within 3 mths 20,000 bonus reward points - convertible into a £100 Amazon voucher. The points arrive as soon as you hit £2,000, so if your normal spending would cover that, just do it on the card and bingo, free Amazon voucher for Xmas.

Key rules: 1) This is a charge card (min income £20k), designed to be fully repaid each month, so there's no interest. Fail to do that & you get a £12 charge and credit file default. 2) The card's fee-free in year one, but £125 annually after, so if you don't want to pay that, cancel before then. Full info: Credit Card Freebies
3. christmas countdownXmas & NY Travelodge rooms £21. If you're visiting rellies, budget chain Travelodge still has some £21 rooms for 23 Dec to 2 Jan. Go quick to bag prime dates. Full help: Travelodge Sale
4. Bag 5% off ALL Xmas shopping. Cashback credit cards pay you each time you spend on them. So do normal spending and set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month to avoid interest and you're quids in. The cashback's usually paid on the anniversary of opening the account.

Amex Plat Everyday* (min income £20,000) pays a HUGE 5% back, up to £100, on ALL spending in the first 3 mths, then up to 1.25%. So apply now and happily the big cashback covers all Xmas spending (fail to fully repay and it's 19.9% rep APR).

If your credit score ain't great, Capital One Classic Extra* accepts some with older CCJs/defaults and pays 0.5% cashback on all spending. Though if you fail to fully repay, it's a monstrous 34.9% representative APR. Full step-by-step help in Top Cashback Cards (APR Examples).
5. Try some DemoHoHotivation. The www.demohohotivator.com tool shows how small sacrifices can save you large, eg, how much you can boost your Christmas cash by cutting out something like a cappuccino or weekly mag. We're not saying do it, just work out which use of cash gives you more joy.
6. Ban unnecessary Christmas presents? Christmas isn't a retail festival. Yet gift inflation sees people give to an ever-widening glut of extended family & colleagues. The joy of giving can be selfish if it obliges someone to buy you one back. Read my Ban Xmas Gifts? blog and consider a No Unnecessary Presents Pact.
7. 40 tricks to boost online shopping power. Use the web's power to cut the cost of most gifts. Full info in our 40 Online Shopping Tricks, including:

a) Shopping comparison sites find the cheapest prices for all goods - MegaShopBot.com searches the best for each type.
b) Build secret 75%+ bargain basements with Amazon Discount Finder.
c) Map hidden Local eBay Deals with free tools & smartphone apps.
d) Keep an eye out for Photo Book & Canvas Codes.
8. Don't borrow for Christmas, but if you do, ensure it's 0%. Xmas borrowing's a bad idea. Far better to go, er, cold turkey, and have a more austere time (Christmas is just one day, after all). Yet if you'll borrow anyway, at least do it right. The cheapest way is on a 0% SPENDING card.

The longest is Tesco's 18mths 0%*. Yet even though it lasts more than a year (provided you make the min repayments), plan to clear it before next Xmas or you'll compound your problems. If you don't clear before the 0% ends, beware - it'll jump to 16.9% representative APR. FULL help: Top 0% Cards or check your chances of getting it in our Eligibility Checker.
9. Thriftsmas - crafty ways to make everything you need. The Old Style forum board's Xmas Prep 2013 thread's about how to thriftily spend time, rather than cash, to DIY. Gems include crafty cards, magic reindeer food (edible glitter & oats) and cute monkeys made from old socks as prezzies.
10. Got it & don't need it? Flog it now for fast Xmas cash. Many old items can be worth serious cash. Our MobileValuer comparison finds the best payer for any handset - you can get £100s. Plus see eBay Selling for tools & tips on getting max value for any wares at the online auction giant.
11. Don't use Tesco vouchers for festive food. A £10 voucher is worth just £10 in-store. Yet you can triple its value (£10 becomes £30) on gift items such as jewellery, or use its in-store 'double-up' scheme to get 2x value year-round on selected items, incl fragrance & clothing. See Reclaim & Boost Tesco Vouchers (some find £100+).
12. Set up a Christmas cupboard, then POUNCE on the biggest discounts. Don't waste time and money, be a tactical Christmas shopper. Decide what you want, make a list, get a Christmas cupboard ready to put stuff in, then wait until what you're buying's at the cheapest price.

To find those kick-bum prices: a) This free weekly email will include all the big bargains, vouchers and one-day sales. b) Regularly check our Vouchers, Hot Bargains and Sales pages for even more. c) Use the Forum WOW Deals Feed to track MSE forum users' best-rated deals, updated every minute.

The Ones Not To Miss Wed 11 Sep 2013
New. No energy hikes for FOUR winters
Fix your gas & electricity tariff until March 2017 with a new, cheaper, and far longer tariff
We're striding towards winter. Sadly, energy prices are predicted to rise this year, then keep rising. Two new top fixes help, but don't rely on them being around long, firms use them to grab market share. Once they hit quotas, they're withdrawn.
  • Save big cash and beat price hikes. Npower's just launched two new leading fixes where you lock in a rate. Better still, neither have early exit penalties, so if things change you can leave - no problem.
NEW TOP FIXED PRICES Based on typical usage, not available for prepay
Fixed until Exit fee Cost/yr
Someone on a standard tariff (1) - - £1,420
New longest fix (& cheaper than any other 3yr+ fix): Npower Price Protector* 31 Mar 2017 None £1,340
New cheapest non-exit penalty fix: Npower Online Price Fix* 30 Nov 2014 None £1,180
Cheapest fix, but shorter & with exit fees: M&S Fix and Save 30 Sept 2014 £50 (2) £1,140
Cheapest variable (subject to price rises) - - £1,155
Unless stated, prices are avg monthly direct debit, dual fuel. Varies by region. Pay by monthly direct debit to save 5-8%. (1) Quarterly billing, dual fuel Ofgem data. (2) If you leave either fuel
  • ALWAYS compare and get £30 cashback. Your winner and saving depends on your usage and where you live. Use our MSE Cheap Energy Club comparison to get your exact results, plus £30 dual-fuel cashback and a free night in a hotel if you switch to the Npower tariffs above via it. Uniquely, Cheap Energy Club then monitors your tariff & alerts you if it's time to switch again. Alternatively, more cashback deals in Cheap Gas & Elec.

PS. We're celebrating, 500,000 people have now joined our energy club in just 6mths. Thank you. We hope it helps.
  • Is it worth fixing? If you're on a standard tariff, it's a no-brainer - you can save and ensure a hike-free 3 and a half years. As prices could rise 30-40% by then, that could be a huge saving (not guaranteed of course). Whether to fix short or long, or ditch a cheaper tariff now to fix, is a finer balance that depends on how important price certainty is to you.

Lock in card debts at 6.9% for LIFE, no fee.
New top 'life of balance' deal. Shift debts to this new card and the rate stays permanently low

If you've costly credit card debt, a balance transfer means you get a new card that repays your existing ones, so you owe it instead. Normally they're short-term offers, but a new deal is perfect for those who need long-term cheap rate certainty.

  • lock in card debts 6.9% for LIFE. If you can repay quickly 0% wins, but for longer or if you're unsure of repayments, 'life of balance' is safer. With the new MBNA Rate for Life* card accepted customers can lock in at 6.9% APR until all the shifted debt is repaid, as long as you make the min repayments. Transfers must be made within 60 days of opening.
  • Or 28mths 0% if you can repay quicker. Grab the 0% deal with the lowest one-off fee lasting long enough for you to clear the card within that time. Here are the best buys:

    - Longest 0%: Barclaycard's 28mths 0%* but there's a 3.5% fee (18.9% rep APR after).
    - Long 0% lower fee: Lloyds 24mths 0%* with a much lower 1.5% fee (17.9% rep APR after).
    - Lowest fee 0%: Lloyds 15mths 0%* with just a 0.8% fee (17.9% rep APR after).
    - All options: See Best Balance Transfers (APR Examples).
  • Will you be accepted? To get cards, you must pass a credit score. Yet applying to find out adds a mark to your credit file. To find each card's acceptance odds without a mark, use our free Balance Transfer Eligibility Checker.
  • The balance transfer golden rules. 1) Repay at least the set monthly min, or you may lose cheap deals. 2) Aim to clear 0% debt or shift before the 0% ends, or rates rocket. 3) Don't spend on these, it isn't at cheap rate.

Last chance to get a cheap mortgage fix?
The pundits say the tide is turning, cheap deals are being pulled. If you're planning a fix soon, do it now.
Many have had cheap mortgage heaven, with rates at historic lows. Yet while the Bank of England boss says rates are unlikely to move up for a couple of years, the markets think otherwise. That's factoring into fixed mortgage rates.
  • Top five year fix 2.49%, but for how long? City swap rates have jumped over the last week, and they usually feed into mortgage rates, so we've seen 'best mortgages set to disappear' headlines. That's probably over-ramped. A more balanced view from broker L&C: "There are still some brilliant deals... but the tide is slightly turning." Do watch out for extra fees though; the smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact. Use our Mortgage Calc to work it out.

  • Should I fix? Judging the market is tough. But at the moment, we're in a rare time where fixing and getting the certainty of a guaranteed rate can be cheaper than a 'discount' deal where the rate will move with the market. Yet more importantly, look at your own finances. If any increase in your mortgage rate would put you close to the financial brink, the more you should focus on certainty. Question of the week

Q: Is it possible to get travel insurance just for lost luggage, flight delays or cancellation of holidays? I have private medical insurance (PMI) so I don't need medical cover. Michael, by email.

MSE Tony's A: The first thing to say is most PMI policies don't cover you outside of the UK. If you have one of the few that do, it's likely to have limited range and for emergency cover only, so check yours carefully.  Also travel insurance policies usually include repatriation (bringing you home when ill, which can be very expensive), PMI may not.

So it's safer to go for travel insurance as well - especially as it's designed as a package (medical, baggage, cancellation, flight delay, repatriation and more) so trying to find one with no medical cover can cost more than having one with. If you are duplicating, you could plump for a dirt-cheap policy, from £15/year - see our Cheap Travel Insurance guide.

Please suggest a question of the week (we can't reply to individual emails).
