This week | MARTIN'S QUICK BRIEFING: For more tips, alerts & awful puns, follow Martin on Twitter ...but were afraid to ask. A balance transfer card repays debts on other cards for you, so you owe it instead at a cheaper rate. As more of your repayments clear the debt, instead of just servicing interest, you save and are debt-free sooner. As a hot deal's ending, I thought I'd go through deals & answer your queries.
Try to pick the card with the lowest transfer fee (a one-off fee of the amount you transfer), within the time you need to clear the debt. That's why I rate Lloyds' card, as it's the lowest fee of any 20mth+ card. Yet apply after Fri and the fee doubles, so go quick. More help in the Which Card Is Cheapest? tool. Always obey the Golden Rules (1) Clear or shift again before the 0% ends, or you pay the full APR. Your balance transfer questions answered... Q. Will I be accepted? Cards score your application based on their wish list of a profitable customer. If you've had past credit problems, it's tough. You need to apply to find out, but that marks your credit file. So use our Eligibility Checker first to see which cards your odds are best with, plus our Boost Your Credit Score guide. For far more help and info, see the full Best Balance Transfers guide.

Question of the weekQ. BA has turned down my delayed flight claim as the fault occurred mid-flight rather than before departure. Is it true I can't claim for this, even though I was delayed for five hours? David, by email. MSE Helen K's A: Compensation for flight delays is paid based on the time of arrival at your destination – 3 hours is the crucial time – so it doesn't matter whether the delay occurred before departure or mid-flight. However, one of the key conditions is it must have been the airline's fault - and safety issues can be excluded, so you may not be covered. Please suggest a question of the week (we can't reply to individual emails).
