I'll start with a ta-ta, for now, from me (Martin). For the next few weeks, I'm taking a mini-sabbatical, to focus on family, fitness, some Olympic watching, and recharging my batteries, as there's a lot to do this autumn & winter and I want to be on form to help. So the next few emails and the site will be in the overly capable hands of the MSE team. ENDS 11.59pm WED. FREE £175 to switch to top service bank + 7% reg savings + 0% overdraft. Nearly two million people have complained via our free complaint tool but possible payouts have been delayed as the regulator, the FCA, has just said it won't rule until May 2025 (it was due Sep 2024), and firms will have until Dec 2025 to deal with complaints. Martin's had conversations with the regulator and been told: "Based on our work so far, [redress intervention] is more likely than when we started our review" - so while slower, payouts are more likely. News: Winter Fuel Payments will no longer be paid to all pensioners We've long urged all lower-income pensioners to check if they're due Pension Credit. Now it's even more important. Yesterday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the up to £300/yr annual Winter Fuel Payment currently given to all pensioners in Eng & Wales will be restricted to only those on means-tested benefits - the main one for over-66s being Pension Credit. Yet there are 800,000+ over state pension age who are eligible but don't claim. So we've quickly put together this crucial reminder, for you, and for anyone you know who may be eligible. First, though, here's Martin's view on the Winter Fuel Payment change...
2. Pension Credit has a superpower... it's a gateway entitlement triggering many other boons. If you're entitled to the Guarantee Credit element, this also entitles you to a host of other state protections, including - as we've already discussed - the Winter Fuel Payment this winter.
There's also free dental care, vouchers for glasses and more - see full Pension Credit gateway benefits. |

THIS WEEK'S POLL Are you on a fixed or a variable energy tariff? At the height of the energy crisis, 90% of households were on a standard variable tariff with prices dictated by the Energy Price Cap. But with the energy market slowly coming back to life and cheaper fixed tariffs available, we want to know whether you're on a standard variable tariff or whether you've fixed - and if so, how long you have until it ends. Vote in this week's poll. Chase and Starling tie for top banking service. Last week, we asked you to vote in our biannual banking customer service poll, and over 6,220 people responded. Of the banks with more than 75 votes, Chase was once again at the top of the table, this time tying with Starling, with 95% of customers rating both banks as 'great'. First Direct was close behind, at 91% 'great'. Meanwhile, Barclays was bottom of the pile, with 35% of customers rating it 'poor'. See full poll results. |
MONEY MORAL DILEMMA Should I keep the delay compensation I got for the train ticket I'm claiming on expenses? I travelled to a meeting of an organisation I'm a member of by train, and I'm entitled to claim the cost of my fare on expenses. The train on the way there was delayed by 15 minutes so I made a Delay Repay claim and received £9 compensation. Once the expense is processed, I'll get the full cost of the fare back too. Do I keep the compensation as it's intended to make up for my wasted time, or offer it to the organisation as it paid for the ticket?
