5 Ways to Manage the Farmers Market
Farmers' markets are full of fun and flavor
It's a warm, sunny Tuesday afternoon at the farmers' market and a street performer is strumming Bob Marley's "Is it Love" on his guitar. Kids munch on handfuls of homemade kettle corn as vendors urge passersby to sample strawberries at one booth and tiny disposable cups of goat cheese at another. The sweet scent of fresh navel oranges is in the air, and Stephanie Para-Lavender and her gal pal Allison Ritter are enjoying a free slice or two of the fruit. They drive 45 minutes out of their way to experience all of these sights, sounds, smells and flavors at the Culver City Farmers' Market, and they plan to savor every aspect. "It's fun to get out of the house and not go in a grocery store," said Para-Lavender, who lives in Woodland Hills, California, but schedules her doctor appointments in Culver City on Tuesdays just so she can come to the market. And she always persuades Ritter to join her. "We try to be 'locavores'," said Ritter. "The prices are better in most cases, the selection is better and we love the atmosphere."
