Question of the weekQ: Why do I have to give my name and address for shop refunds? Is it a legal requirement? Sandra, by email. MSE Helen S's A: No. They may ask for your address to send repaired goods or where a replacement is not instantly available. But they can't demand your details. The store might want your details to keep track of customers returning goods to deter "serial returners", or to make sure refunds are legit and not staff taking money from the till. Remember, according to the Sale of Goods Act, shops are only required to refund/replace faulty goods, not if you simply change your mind. Though many have a returns policy which lets you take back goods (in saleable condition) you don't want.
